What is a specialty growth fund?

Specialty growth funds invest primarily in companies within a specific sector or economic area (e.g. technology or life sciences). The individual securities in these funds are generally selected for their growth potential. In other words, they share growth fund characteristics.

Trends and cycles

Specialty growth funds are particularly appealing to people who believe there is an underlying trend that will drive performance in a sector. For example, many people believe longer life spans will drive growth in the health care industry. That trend could last for an indefinite time period.

Meanwhile, the overall economy will undergo cycles of growth and decline. It is difficult to predict how health care, or some other sector, will perform during these cycles.

When a specialty growth fund might make sense

An underlying trend may cause a specialty growth fund to outperform the stock market over time. But, keep in mind, your bet on this area of the economy typically carries more volatility than a broadly diversified growth fund. Don't get on the rollercoaster if you aren't prepared for the ride. Invest in this type of fund only if you believe the sector is poised to perform well over a long time period.

The role of specialty growth funds in your portfolio

Specialty growth funds offer concentrated exposure to a select area of the market. They are typically more aggressive than growth or core funds. Specialty growth funds are best-positioned as a complement to a well-diversified portfolio.
