Janus tax forms

There are several different types of tax forms you may receive from Janus depending on the types of accounts you own and the activity within those accounts.

Identifying tax form types

Form 1099-DIV - reports taxable ordinary income and capital gains distributions. Only accounts with taxable distributions $10 or greater or where backup withholding was taken are reported.

You will not receive a Form 1099-DIV if:

  • Your fund did not pay a distribution.
  • Your ordinary income and capital gains distributions from the fund totaled less than $10 and you had no backup withholding.
  • Your account is a retirement or education savings account.

Form 1099-B - reports proceeds from sales and exchanges of mutual fund shares.

  • You will not receive a Form 1099-B if:

    • You did not sell or exchange shares from your fund. 
    • You sold or exchanged shares from a money market fund.
    • Your account is a tax-deferred account.

    Form 1099-Q - reports distributions from your Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA). Also reports the year-end fair market value.

    You will not receive a Form 1099-Q if:

    • You did not take any distributions from your ESA.
    • You did not transfer from your ESA.
    • Your account is not an ESA.

    Form 1099-R - reports distributions from IRAs and retirement plans.

    You will not receive a Form 1099-R if:

    • You did not take any distributions from your account.
    • You did not recharacterize any contributions from your account.
    • Your account is not a retirement account.

    Form 5498 - reports contributions to IRAs and may report the year-end fair market value.

    You will not receive a Form 5498 if:

    • You did not make or recharacterize any contributions to your account.
    • Your account is not an IRA.

    Form 5498-ESA - reports contributions to a Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA).

    You will not receive Form 5498-ESA if:

    • You did not make any contributions to your account.
    • You did not transfer to your account.
    • Your account is not an ESA.

You won't receive a tax form if:
  • Distributions (dividends/capital gains) were less then $10 per fund in your taxable account
  • You did not sell or exchange shares from your taxable account
  • You sold or exchanged shares from a money market fund in a taxable account
  • Reportable activity did not occur in your tax-deferred account (retirement account or education savings account)
